A latin expression meaning "beyond the powers", ultra vires refers to any act that is outside the powers of the body in question.
For A Level law students, this will mean government bodies excercising their powers to make delegated legislation under enabling Acts. If the Minister goes beyond the powers granted in the enabling Act, the rules he has made will be subject to judicial review.
A ruling that delegated legislation is ultra vires will result in it being void.
